The Best Type Of Therapy For You

article from self.com

This cheat sheet can help you understand the various talking cures and find an approach that jibes with your needs.

1) Cognitive-behavioral therapy

CBT helps you identify self-defeating thoughts and start to develop behaviors that are more constructive. And unlike, say, psychodynamic therapy, you don't have to delve into your past (e.g., issues with your mom); CBT is about what's going on in your emotional life now.

What to expect You'll supplement the mental techniques you learn with at-home exercises, such as jotting down your thoughts, and will likely see some progress in only a handful of sessions.

Balancing Energy in Seven Chakras

from thepinkfridge.com

Chakras are the seven main energy centres in the body which can be used for balancing and healing. Energy should flow through these centres smoothly and blockages or disruptions can lead to health or psychological problems. These energy centres, or chakras, tap into the spine, which is considered an extension of the brain running down the back. The word 'chakra' is from Sanskrit meaning wheel or disk. Energy, or prana, flows through the chakras starting from the root chakra up through the body. Prana represents life force and is a term from Hindu philosophy. Yoga and meditation can help open the chakras to allow the energy to flow through undisrupted. Some healers use crystals to work on their chakras...

The Easiest Health Tip Ever

from menshealth.com

HappyWant to live longer? Just smile—widely.

Past research has found a link between a positive attitude and a healthy heart. But a new study published in the journal Psychological Science found that a person’s smile is also associated with how long they live.

The researchers examined 230 photographs of Major League Baseball players who appeared in the 1952 baseball register. Then they divided them into three categories: People who didn’t smile, people who had a partial smile, and people who had a full smile. (They also noted the players’ weights and ages, among other characteristics.) By 2009, all except 46 subjects had died.

The discovery?

Hope therapy will get us through tough times

by Catherine Ryan

asking helpThings were going pretty well for Melanie. After struggling with being overweight, she had recently dropped a significant number of pounds. She felt great and looked great, too. People noticed. Despite this success, though, a familiar sense of depression crept back. Once the numbers on the scale were stable, Melanie (not her real name) felt she didn’t have the same focus and direction that accompanied her weight-loss goals.

After meeting with a psychologist, she defined a new mission: to increase her strength and endurance. During weekly meetings over several months, Melanie and her psychologist discussed applying goal-setting tactics and the fact that fresh efforts changed her outlook. As she worked daily on toning exercises and stamina-building drills, the feeling of accomplishment returned. By identifying and striving toward a new ambition, Melanie created a new sense of purpose, her psychologist says.

15 Ways to Change the World (and Your Life) One Apple at a Time

By Maria Rodale

applesThe average guy walks into the average grocery store and, this being 2010, he faces a choice.

Well, actually, 47,000 choices of products, many with labels touting their health benefits. Low-fat. High fiber. Natural. Free range. No high-fructose corn syrup. Organic.

Most of the label language is marketing crap.

Some of it is more important than you know.

Organic brands are taking up more and more shelf space, especially in produce sections. Initially, the classier (i.e., pricier) the store, the more organic labels were sprouting among the arugula. But Walmart has now cleared space for them, too. And unless the average guy treats money like so many cabbage leaves, he also notices some unaverage prices on those organic items. He's likely to wonder: Could these foods possibly be worth it? And if I have a cartful, will women like me more?

Is your body image super healthy or utterly out of whack?

by Sarah McColl from Shine.com

You've likely seen footage of women asked to draw a life-sized outline of their bodies on a piece of butcher paper taped up against the wall. Inevitably, the outlines are wonky and out-of-whack: the thighs are humongous, the bellies bulge. Our images of ourselves can be practically grotesque compared to the reality.

So where's this coming from? I will admit that usually when watching movies, it's practically impossible to not notice all the ways in which a svelte actresses' body is unlike my own. Perhaps her triceps bulge or she looks really, really good in short shorts. But last night, when watching the old 1960's movie The Misfits, I couldn't take my eyes off Marilyn Monroe. Yes, she has "It," that unmistakable star power that expands to fill the entire screen. But she also had a butt that jiggled and soft upper arms. In fact, it was her very humanness...
